Large Intestine - Colon

The colon is the part of the digestive tract between the small intestine and the anus. It is about 120-150cm long and it basically absorbs water from the fecal contents, so the feces can become more solid before evacuation. Here, we will discuss certain disease processes, which may need surgical treatment, such as diverticulosis and cancer. we will also discuss some modern diagnostic techniques (i.e.: endoscopic rectal ultrasonography) and therapeutic strategies (i.e.: preoperative-neoadjuvant radiation, sphincter preservation, total mesorectal excision, and laparoscopic colectomy).
